Wi-Fi 7 provides organisations with the ability to have more efficient networks as well as faster connections, while also providing effective cybersecurity.

The rise of cloud computing, AI, IoT, as well as virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality that require higher bandwidths, has been a key driver in the development of Wi-fi 7. The first release of Wi-Fi 7 was in spring 2024 and the second is due by the end of 2026.

The standard provides organisations with the ability to have more efficient networks as well as faster connections, while also providing effective cybersecurity. The rise of cloud computing, AI, IoT, as well as virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality that require higher bandwidths, has been a key driver in the development of Wi-fi 7.

We became a Cisco partner in 2023 enabling us to offer hard-wired and wireless technology to build reliable networks and improve internet connectivity within a range of properties and organisations. Additionally through its subsidiary Meraki we offer a fully cloud-based platform. It allows organisations to manage wireless, switching and routing from a single, cloud-based dashboard with unified visibility across their networks.. Our Managing Director, Aaron Kernaghan, has completed the Cisco Sales Training course as well as Cisco technical training, alongside our Technical Manager, Stephen Gilbert.

What is a local area network (LAN)

A local area network (LAN) is a collection of devices connected together in one physical location, such as a building, office, or home. A LAN can be small or large, ranging from a home network with one user to an enterprise network with thousands of users and devices in an office or school.

Traditionally a LAN comprised of cables, access points, switches, routers, and other components that enable devices to connect to internal servers, web servers, and other LANs via wide area networks. The advantages of a LAN are that devices can use a single Internet connection, share files with one another, print to shared printers, and be accessed and even controlled by one another. It wasn’t until the wide deployment of Wi-Fi technology that LANs became commonplace in nearly every type of environment. What is a Wide-Area Network?

A wide-area network (WAN)  is essentially a network of networks: a collection of LANs or other networks that communicate with one another. Today, there are several types of WANs that touch virtually every aspect of modern life. The internet as a whole is a huge, international WAN.

Data transmission takes place via packet switching whereby  a message is broken into several parts, called packets, that are sent independently, in triplicate, over whatever route is optimum for each packet and reassembled at the destination. A router is a networking device typically used to interconnect LANs to form a wide area network (WAN) and as such is referred to as a WAN device. IP routers use IP addresses to determine where to forward packets. An IP address is a numeric label assigned to each connected network device.

What is a switch?

Switches facilitate the sharing of resources by connecting together all the devices, including computers, printers and servers, in a small business network. Thanks to the switch, these connected devices can share information and talk to each other, regardless of where they are in a building.

What is a router?

Just as a switch connects multiple devices to create a network, a router connects multiple switches and their respective networks to form an even larger network. Ultimately, a router works as a dispatcher, directing traffic and choosing the most efficient route for information, in the form of data packets, to travel across a network.

What is Ethernet?

If two or more connected devices on a shared network attempt to transmit data packets at the same time, a packet collision occurs. Ethernet technology provides rules that allow network-connected devices to talk to one another without packet collisions. Ethernet is associated with connected devices in a wired LAN or WAN. What is an edge router?

An edge platform, also called an edge router, is a single device for connecting and securing enterprise traffic to the cloud. They provide networking, security, and other IT services. Edge platforms include numerous Ethernet ports to connect cellular gateways and wireless access points. To support the size and expected growth of an enterprise, an edge platform should support the latest link types, including 5G, along with advanced network protocols to provide dynamic connectivity at the edge. Power over Ethernet (PoE) is a technique for delivering DC power to devices over copper Ethernet cabling, eliminating the need for separate power supplies and outlets. While PoE doesn’t add Ethernet data capabilities, it offers expanded options for how and where Ethernet end devices can be placed.

What is a Gateway?

gateway is a device that connects different networks with varying communication protocols, acting as the “gate” between them. Its primary role is to translate data between two incompatible networks, enabling devices that otherwise couldn’t communicate to share data. Historically, gateways and routers have been separate devices. However, it’s becoming more common for their functions to be combined and simply called a router. What is a wireless access point?

They extend coverage, allowing devices to connect from a greater distance compared to a router alone. They enhance network performance by distributing the workload among multiple access points, reducing congestion and ensuring a stable connection.
